Purpose & Procedures
You are invited to participate in a research study that is being conducted by Julie Phelan of Rutgers University, and has been approved by the Rutgers University Institutional Review Board.
You must be at least 18 years old to participate. The purpose of the study is to examine how people form impressions of others based on autobiographical descriptions. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to read a brief description of an individual and fill out several short surveys, also administered on the computer. Please note that some of the questions in the surveys are of a highly personal nature. You are free to skip over any questions that make you feel uncomfortable and to stop completing the survey at any time. The total session time will be approximately 15 minutes. Approximately 500 participants will take part in this brief study. In exchange for your participation today, you will receive .5 RPU.
Risks & Benefits
Participation in this study is completely voluntary and anonymous. There are no forseeable risks to participation in this study. To protect the integrity of the research, the hypotheses cannot be fully revealed to you at this time. However, they will be revealed following your participation in the study. Although we cannot guarantee that you will personally benefit from your participation, we believe that this experience may be an interesting opportunity to think about your attitudes and beliefs. Furthermore, your participation will benefit social scientific research.
If you agree to participate in the study, you will click the continue button at the bottom of the page. The website will assign you a random participant number to keep track of your responses, but this number can not be connected back to you. Therefore, you responses are completely anonymous. The researcher will not be able to identify the source of any information supplied by you during the course of the session. In any written reports or publications, no one will be identified or identifiable and only aggregate data will be presented.
