Purpose & Procedures
You are invited to participate in a research study that is being conducted by Julie Phelan and Corinne Moss-Racusin who are graduate students in the Psychology Department at Rutgers University. The purpose of this study is to examine current societal beliefs about the characteristics perceived common for various groups in American society. Therefore, you will see several lists of personality and behavioral traits, and will be asked to rate the traits according to specific instructions given on the top of each page. Throughout the study we ask that you respond based on societal beliefs, rather than on your personal endorsement of any stereotype. That is, we are not interested in how you personally feel, but rather what you feel the belief is in American society. Approximately 300 participants will take part in this brief study. In exchange for your participation today, you will receive .5 RPU.

Risks & Benefits There are no forseeable risks to participation in this study. Although we cannot guarantee that you will personally benefit from your participation, we believe that this experience may be an interesting opportunity to think about cultural beliefs and stereotypes. Furthermore, your participation will benefit social scientific research. This session will take no more than 15 minutes, and participation is completely voluntary.

If you agree to participate in the study, you will click the continue button at the bottom of the page. The website will assign you a random participant number to keep track of your responses, but this number can not be connected back to you. Therefore, you responses are completely anonymous. The researcher will not be able to identify the source of any information supplied by you during the course of the session. Furthermore, my research team and the Institutional Review Board at Rutgers University are the ony parties that will be allowed to see the data. In any written reports or publications, no one will be identified or identifiable and only aggregate data will be presented.

If you have any questions about the research now, or in the future, please email: RUSocialLab@gmail.com.
